Lionel's Grand Adventure Character Interview & Giveaway

Welcome to the Summer Reads Giveaway Hop hosted by I am a reader not a writer and co-hosted by Rex Robot Reviews. We're going on a grand adventure with Lionel Snodgrass today. What? You don't know Lionel? All in due time. First we're going to let author Paul R. Hewlett tell us a little bit about his book, Lionel's Grand Adventure

Lionel's Grand Adventure: Lionel and the Golden Rule is a beginning chapter book about a twelve year old boy who is constantly subjected to to ridicule from his mom and older brother. Things change when he makes a seemingly innocent discovery. The magical, yet unpredictable, Three-Toed-Potbellied Walbuan foot takes him on the adventure of a lifetime. Explore Lionel's adventure and discover the wonderful world of the magical Walbaun foot and the lesson that it helps teach Lionel. My book helps children who want to feel better about themselves. Lionel is very comfortable with who he is despite his physical shortcomings and his bullying mom and older brother.

Well, that tells us some important things about Lionel, but I wanted to know more. So I went back a few years, ahem, a lot of years, all the way to the summer of 1967, and found Lionel at Jardean's Mercantile and Confectionery. This character interview takes place on a hot afternoon in a worn out wooden booth with two cherry fountain sodas between us.

Let's start with how old you are and where you live, Lionel.

I'm 12 years old and I live in Larrystown, Missouri.

So what's new in Larrystown?

Nothing much, my family just moved from Panobscott, Massachusetts.  I have my own room in our new house, that's really neat!  I've met quite a few kids and I've already signed up to play baseball.  That's my favorite sport!

Baseball's your favorite sport.  Do you have a favorite team, or player?  Do you like any other sports or activities?

The New York Zephyrs!  My favorite player is Jimmy Dee.  He's the center fielder and cleanup hitter for the Zephyrs.  That's my dream, to play center field and bat cleanup for the Zephyrs some day!  I like all sports, but mostly baseball.  I like to play cards, and I like playing jacks, even though I'm not very good.  I like to go to the library too.  If I had a bike, that'd be really neat!

So, tell us about your Grand Adventure Lionel.  What's that all about?

Well (pauses to slurp on his cherry soda), I don't want to give it all away, but maybe I'll just say that it all starts in my new bedroom.

You mentioned that you have your own room in your new house.  Does that mean that you shared a room in Panobscott?

Yeah, I've always had to share a room with my big brother Feeney.  Not now though, and that's not even the best part.

What's the best part?

(Grinning from ear to ear)  I found a Three-Toed-Potbellied Walbaun foot!

A what?

     A Three-Toed-Potbellied Walbaun foot!

What's that?

It's a good luck charm, kind of like a lucky rabbit's foot.  It even kind of looks like a lucky rabbit's foot, except it's magic!

Tell us more about the Three-Eared, errr, legged, ahh, Walbaun foot.

(Giggling at the fact that I couldn't get the name right). I found it in my new room, but I didn't know what it was until Mr. Jardean explained it to me.  (Glancing around and speaking quietly now).  He doesn't know that I have one though.  He just knows about these things.  It comes to those in need and is invisible to everyone else, at least that's what they say.  I don't take any chances though.  I keep it secret.  If you wish for something, it will use its magic to make it happen.  Except it doesn't always get it quite right.  Sometimes it can take you on quite an adventure when you make a wish, so you've got to be careful!

Is that what your Grand Adventure is all about then?

Yup!  I start off in Larrystown and head off to quite a few different places before it's all over.  I wouldn't change a thing though.  Well, maybe I'd change the fact that the Walbaun would've been better at it's magic.

Well, we don't want to give too much away. It's been great meeting you.  Is there anything else that you'd like to say?

Just one thing.  Be careful what you wish for. You never know what you'll get!
